Security Clearance Process Overview

Many careers in national security and defense require a federal security clearance. This process ensures that individuals trusted with sensitive information meet strict standards for loyalty, reliability, and judgment.

Clearances are only granted after a conditional job offer from a federal agency or government contractor. The process typically includes background checks, interviews, and in some cases, a polygraph or medical evaluation.

On average, the process takes 9–12 months. Eligibility is based on factors such as allegiance to the U.S., trustworthiness, financial responsibility, and personal conduct.
